You are familiar with the Marlowe story… or are you?
The brilliant Elizabethan dramatist and poet, Christopher Marlowe, is thought to have been killed in a violent fight over a dinner bill at Deptford in 1593.
And yet…
Sometime late in 1598, Marlowe wrote a scathing letter to his patron and protector, Sir Thomas Walsingham.
A complaint
Accusing him of having an “inconstant mind”, Marlowe threatened to “set down a story of faults concealed” and challenged him to “hate me when thou wilt.”
Danger ahead
Sir Thomas, a veteran intelligencer, would have recognized how the threat could reveal a secret that had kept them both safe for over five years.
Years of study
Painstakingly-researched, Marlowe’s Complaint by Peter Hodges will leave you on the edge of your seat like a spy thriller, except that the events and dates outlined are not fiction – they are based on real events over 400 years ago.

Marlowe’s Complaint is a great achievement. Lovely read with lots of solid coherently argued material, much of it new and much that I totally agree with.

I read your book with enormous interest, and am completely convinced by your hypothesis; . . . you provide a much warmer and sympathetic character of Marlowe.
David More
Marlowe’s Complaint is brilliant. The research is impressive, the writing style is catchy and the interpretations are intriguing, even shocking at times. No wonder Marlowe complained!
